Ok, it's kind of hard to explain. First of all I understand you'd rather have them across the room. It definetly looks cool and is easier to get back on target. For some reason I always assume topics like these are geared towards protection. So if it's for target disreguard what I said.But if it IS for self defense then when defending yourselfin close combat (for lack of better words) you press the gun against your chest while your off shooting hand is str8 out to keep them away. If your gun is compensated you will burn a nipple off :)The 17 is a great choice. For another few bucks you can get the 17L (long) or the model 34 which islike the 17L but newer with adj sites and a 10.5 lb trigger.
