  1. Well, two things that I would keep in mind are:1.) What positions have a shortage of talent? And the related question of: Who outperforms their position by the greatest margins. There are a lot of first basemen that can hit 30 home runs, but not many second basemen. Chase Utley therefore, is a monster.2.) What kind of players do the stats favor. Looking at what you've got here, it's clear that you want a lot of top of the order fast guys. Runs, singles, doubles, BB, and Avg are the purview of a leadoff hitter. Triples and stolen bases are for the fast guys. Often these two groups overlap. Comb
  2. Jesus....if you think that's bad...take a look at .
  3. I hear this a lot...no doubt due in part to the nature of the media - always looking for a sound byte; focusing more on the superficial. Since that is what gets coverage and attention, it forces the candidates to boil much of the substance out of their message. As a result, getting good information takes a good deal of effort. It's unfortunate, but it's the way things work these days.If you're looking for more information about what change actually means to Obama, here's 64 pages of policies and plans with links to further information. The big knock on Obama from Hillary is his experience. Th
  4. Even in light of this development, I'm still not convinced this would be a great idea. Giving up a bunch of prospects and signing a pitcher to a 6-year, 137 million dollar contact is risky way to attain long-term dominance. No question the Sox would be better in 2008, but each successive year would put them in slightly worse position. But yeah, had it happened you would have gotten some good players. In somewhat related news, I've been hearing a bunch of good things about Jon Lester recently. I've been down on him the last two years, but I'm pretty optimistic right now. Sure, there's a good cha
  5. Tavarez, for one...perhaps Snyder. I'd feel more comfortable with another starter for the inevitable injury.
  6. Yeah, this is bad news. We were counting on him for 25 or so starts and it's doubtful we'll get much of anything. Before we could start Buchholz in AAA, stashing him until May 15th or so to buy an extra year where he's cost controlled, but that may not be possible now.
  7. Well. Good news. This story is finally over and the Yankees didn't get him. Another bonus is that this comes out before I picked Atlanta to win the NL East...now I don't have to backtrack.
  8. I think the bolded highlights the difference between the AL and the NL quite nicely. As for Bailey and Volquez, I disagree. I think they can give 130-140 pitches every damn game and I know Dusty agrees with me. Honestly I thought Mike Stanton retired years ago. I looked him up and this would scare me as a Reds fan:2005: 89 ERA+ 1.50 WHIP2006: 109 ERA+ 1.43 WHIP2007: 79 ERA+ 1.63 WHIPNow ERA/ERA+ is not a good indicator for relievers because of inherited runners and whatnot, but that's a lot of baserunners for a reliever to be giving up. And now he's 41. And pitching in a band
  9. I'll make a more definitive prediction when it's closer to the start of the season - once rosters are settled and postseason moves are made. For now though, I'm leaning Red Sox, Tigers, and Angels in the AL. Cleveland's good no doubt, but I think there's a very good chance that either Sabathia or Carmona breaks down next year after this year's work load. I think that combined with the upgrades the Tigers have made makes Detroit the favorites.I don't have as good a handle on the NL, but I'm skeptical that Houston can take the division. That goes double if Tejada can't get into the US.
  10. Joe Sheehan from BP had a good (and free!) article today, talking about Jim Rice. He brought up Mattingly as a player with a similar career shape. He feels Rice has the stronger case, but neither are qualified for the Hall.
  11. Hey, we mostly agree! Nice.
  12. Agreed on relievers.Agreed on Rice (out of late 70's Red Sox outfielders, he'd probably be my fourth choice for HOF)Blyleven not in is of course, ridiculous, but he's gaining quickly and I expect him to make it.Raines only got 24.3%. Retarded. He's as good as Tony Gwynn and miles better than Lou Brock (A similar-type player who I'm sure many of those voting against Raines would say is a clear-cut HOFer). When Henderson comes on the ballot, I expect Raines' numbers won't improve much at all, since as deserving as he is, he's no Rickey. Here's a question: if Dennis Martinez pitched a World Series
  13. That's really funny. I almost expected to find this:"Know your <S>dope fiend</S> militant atheist. You will not be able to see his eyes because of tea shades, but his knuckles will be white from inner tension and his pants will be crusted with semen from constantly jacking off when he can't find a rape victim."This place is a quote gold mine."Now that we have met the Militant Atheist, we must ask: How did he become so twisted?" (emphasis always theirs)"They claim this logo is merely symbolic of their worship of science, but its true purpose is to signal to their compatriots their g
  14. Okay, who was the first switch-hitter to be elected to the Hall of Fame?
  15. Babe Ruth was caught stealing.EDIT: Who has the record for most total bases in a game?
  16. That's a weird one because a ball thrown anything like a fastball would have backspin on it.
  17. Thanks speedz for taking some of the burden off me. I really hate arguing with aadams, but I can't help myself. As for the Ramirez getting disproportionately huge all of a sudden, here he is 15 years ago in something called the "Youth Service League"What a skinny ****ing twig. And for Mitchell's ownership of the Red Sox:"I have been a consultant to the owners of the Boston Red Sox since that club wasacquired in 2002 by an ownership group led by John W. Henry. The club labelsthat position “director.” I am not and have never been involved in any way inbaseball operations, and I have no vote on an
  18. Eric Gagne and Donnelly were on the Sox last year. The following are all related to the Sox:Manny AlexanderMike SpinelliPaxton CrawfordJeremy GiambiJosias ManzanilloRoger ClemensMo VaughnChris DonnelsMike LansingKent MerckerMike StantonEric Gagne Brendon DonnellySteve WoodardSo what's evidence do you have to back up that Mitchell isn't turning over Red Sox players (you know, besides the ones he named...)? I'm guessing the same amount of evidence you use to back up almost all your opinions.Like I said earlier in this thread, given the sources you wouldn't expect to see any Red Sox. What evidenc
  19. Yeah, that list is suspect for a few reasons...won't have to wait long to find out what the deal is. It's snowing here, so I get to watch all the carnage as it unfolds from home...and post about it here.
  20. You forgot to mention that he's only 24.For added fun, Miguel Cabrera's most similar player by age (from baseball-reference):21. Hank Aaron22. Hank Aaron23. Hank Aaron24. Hank Aaron
