  1. We used to catch perch all the time in upper Michigan. Oscoda Michigan used to have several Mom and Pop "buckets-o-perch" restaurants along Lake Huron. Man...good eats!My buddys sick ass boat he got last year. He's a big small mouth bass guy, spends...like thousands on shit every year. Has over 50 rods. Who the hell needs 50 F-ing fishing rods??? and has dozens of reel set ups that look like fine watches. He's clearly insane.chi1.jpg(Oak Park Illinois)
    wow. Nice.
  2. That wouldn't work very well. Let's use my example of utg betting $40. If the next player went all-in for $41, then the action would be re-opened. I think we'd all agree that wouldn't be fair.I can understand why you'd propose the limit rule being applied. In fact, I've seen a lot of dealers/floors make the mistake of doing that. Basically, they remember the limit rule, and apply it in a no-limit situation. I saw this once at a table where I was playing. The dealer, another dealer who was playing, AND the floor (after I had called for him) all got it wrong.Quick Edit: The more I work in the poker industry, the more I realize that I'm not perfect. I've made incorrect calls, and probably will again in the future. I guess what I'm saying is that I hope I'm not coming across as an arrogant "know-it-all".
Yes, i agree it wouldn't be fair either but it was just to illustrate why i feel the limit rule should be applied to the no limit rule. it's the same thing if the all in player is in for $79 and it's so close to $80 but action is not reopened to the original bettor. The limit rule applied to nl is the best compromise in an imperfect situation imo.
I enjoy how most people don't read the responses and just post. It gets pretty annoying considering the correct answer was on page 1, 2, and now 3. Although Sandwedge is clearly a more composed dealer than I was. I would just slap people at the table for questioning things if they were wrong. I have no tolerance for idiots who argue when they have no clue.
U seem angry all the time. u used to be more mellow. What's up dude?
  3. Consider it this way:You place the original bet. If every player in the hand calls you, and it gets back to you, it would definitely be unfair for you to raise (you would be raising yourself). Now lets say that you bet and get raised by someone. The nature of the game is that you can reraise them back. Let's say that you bet, get 8 callers, and the ninth person raises you. You can (and should be able to) still reraise him. This is definitely fair, and yes, it punishes the people who simply called your bet (with people behind them still waiting to act).Considering the two concepts above, we have to have criteria for what is a raise. In no-limit, for a bet to be considered a raise, it HAS TO be equal to a full raise. True - there's not much difference between 700 and 800, but there has to be a point at which the all-in bet is considered a raise.Consider it this way -- In no limit unless an all-in bet is AT LEAST a full raise, then it's a CALL.In limit holdem, however, we allow an all-in in be a raise if it is at least half the size of a full raise.
Thx again sandwedge, well put. Now, i'm gonna drive u more crazy here lol. How about if the rules were changed such that as long as the amount is more than the regular calling amount, it's a raise? That would be the other extreme for no limit i guess. However, if i could pick a rule, i would like to see the limit rule applied to no limit, seems to make more sense. It's in between the current rule and the one I just proposed.
  4. if everyone made legal raises/calls such as what you just described you most certainly can reraise when the action is back to you. RROP actually states "The number of raises in any betting round is unlimited"and yes the correct answer is $1100 to go ($400 is the actual raise amount)
thx dna.if that's the case then I think the existing rule is stupid. Whether it's 700 or 800 doesn't really make much of a difference but if it's 800 then the original better gets a chance to reraise and possibly protect his hand or whatnot and force the limpers to call or give up their hand.
  5. This is actually a common mistake. I've seen it in my own room on occasion (and wanted to beat my head against a wall). It also happened to a buddy of mine about a month ago at the Hard Rock in Tampa. If you haven't acted yet, you have every right to raise the all-in bet. If you have already acted, the action is reopened to you ONLY if the all in bet is at least a full raise. The reason, Dratj, is this: Let's say you are third to act, postflop, in a NL game. UTG bets $40, and then the next player goes all in for $70. Why shouldn't you be able to go all in (or any other raise)? You would definitely have that right had the all in guy folded to the $40 bet.The problem is that people misinterpret the terminology. An All-in that is less than a full raise does not "re-open" the action. That means that UTG, who bet $40, has already had action and therefore cannot reraise. However, everyone else hasn't acted -- the action is still open to them. Some dealers and floorpersons misinterpret the "does not re-open the action" as meaning "closing the action".edit: and because many of these dealers have bigger breasts than me, they make LOTS more money than me.
Thx sandwedge, its a good explanation, hopefully i've understood it correctly. So, is the correct answer $1100 then? 700 + 400? Not 1200, right? Now, say the all in guy had 800 making it a full raise and a few people called this raise, as the original better of 400, are u allowed to reraise or just call?
  6. Yeah, but it's not hard to guess. who has money/deals etc. ? There were far more walking the money tightrope before the online endorsement days. But the high stakes poker community has an economy all it's own, some are bankers, lenders, stakers, etc. many are broke one week and set the next. If you are good and have a winning track record you most likely will never be penniless. It would be very hard to suddenly halt it all and tally up everyone's actual individual net worth for that exact moment because so much of it is intermingled or in a state of flux.but everyone knows most of this. Was this a serious question?blah blah blah....
yah, it was actually a serious question. I know you can't say but I would love to know which tv pros are broke.I'm thinking that most pros nowadays have deals with pokerstars or fulltilt, so those pros are prob ok but then most of the tv pros have those deals, so I still really can't figure out who is broke and who isn't. Oh well, doesn't matter I guess, I 'm just a nosy parker.
  7. Steve is right as this all relates to poker players. Only a few have seemingly endless $$$ and many are broke or always skating that line. but does poker fandom (or any fandom) always come down to money?
So, who are these broke pros that you speak of? I mean, obviously you know, is it some kind of secret or something?
  8. Let me start by saying I've never asked anyone for an autograph in my life, and I have no idea what people do with the scrap piece of paper they may ask me to sign. That's just not my thing. I'm not wow'ed by anyone really. I've met lots of "important people" and the more of them I meet the more obvious it becomes that the substance rarely matches the hype. Thing is, I've met lots of people, whereas a random couple from Idaho may not have. They come to the WSOP and see their favorite players, the guys they watch on TV, and it's a pretty cool moment for them. Don't hate. Only thing worse than a fanboy is a fanboy hater!
Not that it's bad but your signature is a pic of you with Obama. I would say you're wow'ed by him. Kurt, your initial statement is wrong, fluffdog, bob and lots of other fcper's in this post is right, it is hard to be a top pro poker player, otherwise all of us would be making millions playing poker, winning multiple bracelets, wpt events, getting sponsored by pokerstars and playing almost all the events like DN. Just like any other discipline, anyone could prob do it but to be the best in the world at it, definitely not.
  9. Awesome work! This weekend we went out to do some sport climbing outside of Lone Pine (south of Bishop, CA) and I led a few 5.7's and some 5.8's. It was a totally different experience and I am hooked on it. It was the most fun I have had in a while. Good Times.
    Thx man!
  10. Cliff notes....Dude draws SSI "Disability" due to mental issues but is a competent 1/2 live player. Lives in KS but takes a shot in Vegas and goes hotel hopping for several months with a bunch of coupons and comps. Runs bankroll up to about $5K but has a nasty Video BJ habit and constantly spews profits back.Lots of posters implore him to stay away from Video BJ and stick to poker, he promises he will then posts with even more BJ losses. Offers bounty to anyone catching him play BJ machines...obv he never quits the machines but somehow doesn't go busto, eventually goes back to KS.I think he was 86'd because of some dumb dispute with another player about eating at the table that escalated to verbal BS and he wouldn't quit yapping so they booted him, nothing earth shattering.
kinda interesting but imo not the most amazing poker blog, not even close.
  11. got into an argument with mom over something I cant remember and she through a glass full of water at me. I ducked just in time for it to go flying past my head, crashing into the framed Lamborghini Countach poster hanging above my headboard, the glass shattering all over my bed. I loved that effing poster.
Threw not through. Wrong of your mom to throw a glass of water at you regardless of what you said.
  12. I ran a half marathon this weekend. Took me 2 hrs and 25 min which isnt a great time but i finished it. I entered it whimsically just to see if I could do it. Didn't train for it. I definitely will for the next one though. I want to improve my time and also avoid the soreness that I'm experiencing now.

  13. wow, lots of awful advice in here. mods, please delete all of these misinformed responses up until this post. thank you. ok. public schools are all terrible... everywhere. theres nothing local about it. private schools for the most part are only slightly better. in case you were wondering, colleges are almost universally terrible as well, except when it comes to convincing people to waste all of their money on them, and the degrees they hand out are worthless.do your kids a favor: send them to private school if you must and then tell them not go to college. tell them to read books and watch lectures and other videos on youtube if they want to continue learning. that will cost you and them relatively nothing. then tell them to focus on getting work experience or starting a business.
wow, are you serious?learning stuff on youtube?Good luck trying to get a professional degree by not going to college. If everyone followed your advice, there would be no engineers, lawyers, doctors, dentists, teachers, pharmacists, nurses etc. School isn't for everyone and there are lots of useless degrees out there but you can't seriously think no one should go to college.
Some things get easier with time in regards to prep work, but really, the standards in most states change somewhat every year and the number of required assessments and meetings to review the data from assessments grow every year in public school. That means learning the new assessment tools and how to analyze the data from the new tools and then use that information to reach out to the kids that aren't meeting the standards by implementing new teaching strategies. Also, teachers are now being threatened with stepping up their game or getting out. This is good for kids, but I think that the days of teaching the same lesson plans from year to year are over. It's all about teaching the same stuff in new ways and "No child left behind" and whatnot. The teachers are doing all of this now with less time than ever before. The half days that used to be set aside for planning, professional development and parent-teacher conferences have been eliminated. All of the activities that were set aside for those days have to be fit into the mornings and afternoons. Also, keep in mind that even some teachers in elementary school coach sports at the high school level. All the coaches are teachers. In our district, you can't hold a coaching position without holding some other instructional position at one of the schools. Many teachers teach summer school or offer tutoring, too. Not all, mind you, but many. There are also no "life licenses" issued to teachers in my state, anymore. All licenses issued for a couple of decades now have a continuing education requirement. I think there are teachers that manage to slip by with "cushy" teaching jobs by blowing off meetings and doing the bare minimum, but in my state, as in many, education budgets are being slashed and school districts, looking to get more value for their money, have increased accountability standards. The days of cushy teaching jobs around here have been on the way out for a while.
Well, even with all that, assuming you don't coach high school stuff and teach summer school (which you get paid extra and is only one month extra), is it correct to say that you still get 9 weeks off in the summer, one week march break and two weeks christmas (for a total of 12 weeks off a year-3 months!)? I'd say you work 40 to 50 hours a week max unless you're coaching high school sports (do you?) I'm not saying your job isn't important or isn't hard or stressful when you are teaching but with 3 months off a year, that imo is a cushy job. Let's say you are really hard working and spend a total of one of those months prepping, that still leaves you with 8 weeks off a year which is way more than any other job out there. No offense nikki but i think my cousin who is also a teacher would agree with me.
  14. I wouldn't call the hours worked by the teachers where I work "cushy" (a public elementary school grades k-5). They are contracted for a 7:30-3:00 day with half of an hour for lunch and about 40 minutes of prep time. In reality, they usually arrive earlier, stay later and come in a goodly number of weekend days. In addition, they take home much of their grading to do in the evenings. In the summer, they often attend professional development activities. Indeed, the spring, summer and winter holidays are a nice perk, but many of those days they spend preparing for the regular school year. Also, teachers don't have time to post in forums, facebook, check the scores/call their bookees, chit chat, power nap, go to lunch in restaurants or take 20 minute shit/surf the news on their blackberry breaks during the school day. They have meetings most mornings and afternoons and a room full of kids from 8:00-2:30 except their aforementioned 40 minutes of prep which is often rife with interruptions and gets spent dealing with discipline issues.
Let me know if any of the following is wrong and why. I'm curious and playing devil's advocate here. So, please don't take any offense. If I were a primary school teacher, I can understand the prep work to be a little more during the first couple of years but even then the material is so easy, i can't imagine it taking too much time. however, if you have been teaching grade 3 for several years, the prep work should be minimal? Also, say you spent 2 hrs a day after school to mark stuff, woudn't you still be done by five? I do agree with you that during school hours, it can be quite rough to manage all those kids but no job is all gravy. Unlike sandwedge, for primary school, you prob don't have to devote too much after school time to extracurriculars, if you did i can understand the hours to be very long. I also can't imagine any teacher spending much of the summer prepping. Some of my patients are teachers and they seem to have cushy summers, traveling for a month or two or spending most of the summer up at a cottage or something like that. They definitely think they have a sweet deal.
  15. Well, remember that I worked at a private school and that the high school had boarding students. Every teacher was expected to coach or do extracurricular activities throughout the school year. I coached 3 sports - Middle school cross country, high school jv girls basketball, and middle school golf.During the basketball season, a typical week went like this: Teach a regular course load and basketball practices after school, basketball games on Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday nights (roughly 4pm - 10pm or so), help run middle school basketball games for 3 hours Saturday mornings, and do at least one dormitory duty during the week or on Sunday nights(basically supervise the dorm from 7pm until midnight).Of course, it's something you know you're getting into when you accept the job, and most of the time it's very rewarding. There were times, though, that I'd be really fatigued especially during basketball season. This is when I'd add up the hours I was working, and it would often be in the 70 hour per week range, for several weeks in a row.I'm sure that there are cushy teaching jobs out there, but there are also ones that take up a lot of time. My job was nothing compared to the typical high school football coach, who really devotes all of his spare time for several months to his job. The reward isn't really in the paycheck - it's in making a difference in young people's lives. As for poker, yes there's still a market for the b&m's. We've had some very slow periods over the last year, but it seems to be all economy related. When people started getting their tax checks a couple of months ago, they were beating down the casinos' doors trying to get in.
Ah, I didn't factor in the extracurricular activities. My cousin teaches grade 3 in public school. I think his hours are fairly cushy, I can't imagine there to be too much going on after school for those kids. So, maybe the way to go is to teach the younger kids and be in public school. Ah, i miss the b and m poker in some ways but I just don't have the time to sit for hours at a table anymore. Also, the passion to play nowadays is significantly diminished. Do you still play a lot?
