Hockey! Hockey! Hockey!

23 Sep 2005

I'm totally addicted and I love it. I could spend hours and hours, weeks upon weeks, working on my fantasy hockey pool. I've been in the same pool for 11 years now and it's a keeper league that is so realistic you feel like you are a real GM.

I have a sentimental connection to Radek Bonk, the last remaining original "Cheap Thief" on my roster. I picked up Bonk when he was just 18 years old and have watched him blossom for 11 years now into a dependable point producer.

Oh by the way, if you don't like hockey this blog just might be one to skip! Seriously, it's all about the hockey.

Today, I've been looking through my trusty Hockey News magazine while surfing the net looking over all of the stats and numbers that relate to my pool. There was an article on poker in the Hockey News, man is poker hot!

In the meantime, I made two separate trades, one of them being a blockbuster that puts me in a place I've never been before- loaded with cash for the free agent draft.

You see in my pool (www.alternativehockeyleague.com), each team has a salary cap of $60, but you can trade cap room which acts just like real money. In my first trade, I gave up D Wade Redden, Ott. and F Sergei Brylin for F Chris Drury, a second round pick in 2006-07, and 13.00 in cap room.

That put me at $73 and gives me the opportunity to go after some marquee free agents, a la Jaromir Jagr.

In my next trade, I gave up on D Daryl Sydor, TB., D Marek Malik, NYR., and D Ruslan Salei, ANA in return for 2.50 more in cap room. My defense is really thin now, but with $49 at the free agent draft I should be able to pick up at least two all star defensemen a la Sergei Zubov or Sandis Ozolinch.

I am so excited about the draft on October 1st I can't explain it! Before we have the free agent draft we also hold a junior draft which acts like our AHL entry draft, only you can draft players of any age. A 15 year old is going to go in the top 10 this year!

I have the #2, #5, and #10 overall pick so I've been studying hard trying to find those hidden gems. The #2 pick will probably be F Bobby Ryan, ANA. since Crosby was drafted in our pool when he was 14!

I've literally put in at least 30 hours of work into this thing and I'm nowhere close to done. I even have my assistant Travis AND his wife working on it!

There's even more hockey stuff on my mind too. I'm going to run an FCP Survivor Hockey Pool which is similar to an NFL pool. Each weekend you have to pick a team to win and if they do you advance, but cannot pick that same team again for the remainder of the season. I know it may seem silly, with all of the other commitments I have, but I just don't care. I love my fantasy hockey and it keeps me young. It's not for money or anything like that, it's just for fun.

My friends think I'm nuts when I tell them that I'm flying to Toronto just for the AHL draft. I'm in Grand Rapids right now so it's not exactly a long flight, but I would have flown from Australia if I had to!

When people ask me what my "dream job" is, the answer is simple: CEO, or General Manager of an NHL franchise. I'd have to win like, the next 40 million dollar tournaments in a row to own a team, but you can dream right?

It's a goal, a rather lofty goal, but it's something that I always wanted to do and really enjoy doing. I'm pretty good at it too, as in the AHL there have only been two teams crowned the champions twice, the "Ghosts of Elvis" and my beloved "Cheap Thieves."

This could be the year I win my third... back to work! I know there has to be some 12 year old Serbian dude out there with some skills! If he is out there, I will find him :-)
