I have been working at my Omaha game as of late and this hand came up.

It was a live $1/$2 no limit game and the other players were generally pretty weak over playing their hands.

I was on the BB with 3 icon_suit_spade.gif J icon_suit_club.gif 8 icon_suit_club.gif J icon_suit_heart.gif and I checked with 4 limpers.

Flop comes: J icon_suit_diamond.gif 9 icon_suit_club.gif 10 icon_suit_heart.gif with $11 in the pot.

I check, UTG+1 bets the minimum $2. The next two call and the button bumps it to $40.

What would you do?

*edit - bad wording.

Were you the BB here, or did you "limp" in? If you weren't in the bb, fold preflop.

Either way, you can fold here. You're in here for pretty much nothing, and are for sure drawing for the board to pair, likely for every dollar in front of you. Meh. Find a better spot.

Yes. Usually when I'm in the BB, I don't "limp" in to a pot. I may "check" from time to time though.

Ah... right... bad wording on my part... sorry about that. Communication is not my strongest attribute...

I do not have much experience in Omaha. Couple horse tournaments, couple session of $20/$40 limit HO, and some $10/$20 half kill at the Wynn a year ago. I haven't read nothing on the game. Just pretty much winging it from some hear say of others. Do you have any recommendations of decent books and what not on omaha that I should pick up?

I did pretty much insta-folded there with a slight wince and not much thought. Gut feeling told me it was a bad situation. The turn brought a 7 icon_suit_club.gif and everyone pushed. The board paired someone into quads on the end. Looking at everyones cards every worst case was there. Ac draw, K straight, other sets(which killed my boat potentials). Just wasn't sure dropping top set so quickly in omaha was generally the right idea or that I had just dodged a bullet there...

Thing is, that $40 bet SCREAAAAAAAMS of a made straight wanted to take it down, so it's pretty well just an odds calculation type deal.

We only have 7 outs to boat up on the turn, so roughly, it doesn't look like we have the odds.

I'm too lazy to factor in stack sizes and implied odds though.

Thing is, a lot of straights will shut down when the board pairs.

So, that is why I favor chucking it.

Good point. Very much noted.

I didn't have much info on the guy who made the bet. But the way he threw out the chips just gave me the he's just a complete idiot feeling. One of the guys who smooth called had the I have the straight but I am unsure if I should raise here kinda look. I was more worried about that smooth caller than the $40 raise guy. Before he had even raised, dumping at the first display of strength had already crept into my mind. I would of called the $2. Not sure what I would have done when the 7:club: came though. Being a novice and a hold em player, I probably would have called the bet then lost my stack on on the river.

Thanks for the input.

bdc , why are we folding this preflop in an unraised multiway pot if we are not bb?

I am always for seeing a cheap flop with high pocket pairs in unraised , multiway pots.

Yup. With the J being suited I would call this in position after a couple of limpers.

Zach - good analysis. Now start playing some.
