Daniel,
I am a good cash game player. Although I enjoy tournaments much more, I am not that good in them.
When playing cash games, I usually take every hand individually, playing no certain style in any hand. I have been successful in doing that and that's how I used to play in tournaments as well. But I felt i needed to improve my tournament strategy skills, so I bought Erik Lindgren's book.
Most important in his book was that I should play aggressively, especially early on in the tournament to accumelate chips early on. This made complete sense to me, because usually I survive for a while, then find myself on the short-stack. I am not a conservative player at all, but because most tournament players are crazily aggressive, I have to play them with good hands. So, I said to myself, let's try Erik's advice and play looser and more aggressive.
I played a few tournaments with this new style, I must say I'm not too comfortable with it. I started playing hands like K-7 suited out of position against very loose who enter virtually every pot. This way, if I don't hit a good flop, I can do nothing - can't raise or bluff because I know I will get called.
So, after a few tournaments, I won 1, did well in a few others, and did really bad in the rest!! I think this was because I played many hands and lost pots early on, and my aggressive style made me lose money.
I need your advise, do I play loose and aggressive (which I know is a better tournament strategy), and will get used to this playing style? Or play the way I feel more comfortable with (changing gears to suit the situation after almost every single hand)??
Thanks,
Tareq
