Got killed tonight on two consecutive predraw 8 hands. On the first one I stood pat and kept betting while villain kept drawing and he hit his 7 hand on the final draw. On the next hand I stand pat again with position in my favor but this time villain stands pat after the first draw. I decide to break my 8, miss, call, miss again and fold after the 3rd draw.

In general are predraw 8's dangerous hands since someone with a good 7 draw is likely to hit?

I think you just ran badly based on your description. 8's shrink up in multiway pots though so be cautious but heads up they play very well.

2-7 has unreal variance if you're playing it correctly (i recommend 600-1000BB to play a very aggro style like my own). i wouldn't sweat it.

Really? I would have thought 2-7 would have lower variance than some of the other games. Razz drives me frickin insane. In 2-7 I at least feel like I have more control over the outcome. Until I get dealt 8's predraw, that is.

I'm going to look back at the hands tonight and see if I could have gotten more aggro to limit the field. I'm pretty sure they were both HU by the final draw but I can't recall exactly.

well, think about it this way: very regularly, you are making bets with pat tens and jacks on the end, as only like a 51-58% favorite, and sometimes those bets are getting raised to try to make you break (but prob not that at lower limits). sometimes you have people drawing dead, but i'd say that happens a lot less than in HE, o8, etc.

Well so far I've seen quite a bit of variance but it has come almost entirely from confrontations between good and great hands. The first two times I played I won more than a buy-in each time largely because I made a lot of 7 draws and nailed players holding 8's. The last two times I played I've lost about a buy-in total largely because I've been the one holding the 8's and losing to the successful 7 draws (and better 8's), or breaking smooth 9's but not completing the draw. It's the 8's that are causing me the most trouble because in most cases I have no choice but to hold on and hope nobody draws out.

some perspective.

while the variance is huge in 2-7, if you drop 30 bets in micros you need to think about what you're doing. not that it won't happen, but in games where players do not value bet with 23468...
