Full Version: Starting With An Ace Up

Here comes a general stud/stud h/l question. I normally play HORSE .25/.50 or .50/1

Generally, when I'm showing an ace, how frequently should I be raising? Obviously I'll be raising with a pair of aces (other pairs) or maybe 3 lows in h/l, but anything else you really do?. Should I avoid bluffing at these limits?
quadaces
At that level it is hard to bluff obviously.

But when you have an A up it also depends on the your other cards, situation and position.

sorry I couldn't get them to convert right now. Those are just 3 that I pulled from my current game, but they don't address all my Qs.

Well if you've got 2K(A) and you raise, you do it in the hope that it would fold people out. Does this happen at .25/.50? No. You'll get called in 4 different spots by 77(2), 84(3), 85(2), and a stubborn QQ(K). Now what do you have? You don't have 35(A) or A4(A), you've got 2KA - which is absolute crap.

One of the very few situations I see raising 2K(A) that might be profitable is if you're in late position and the first one in with two harmless bananas to act - like a T and a 9.

Well if your at the lower levels take stealing totally out of your game as most are calling stations. Stealing works with a Ace up against tight players as well as good players (they will push back though). In Stud 8 like 146 said auto do it when you got a couple bananas behind you. In Stud Hi you can do it more often especially in late position with a lot of low cards behind you.
KingJames
As said it is situational... the other two cards you hold, the position relative to the bring in, and the game matter a lot

I play a lot of .5/1 HORSE on tilt and I don't see anyone who calls the bring-in fold to a raise from an ace

So I strictly raise for value

Stud Hi

Split Aces with any other card is a raise
Wired pairs 9+
3 flush with one or no dead
3 broadway cards with no broadway cards up

etc

Stud 8

I suck at stud 8, but I generally raise with any pair of aces and if I have a broadway or 6 or lower all the better

once again look for 3 flushes and live & low cards

Razz- people think Ace-raises in razz are steal attempts, which a lot of times are, so if you do if for value with (6 2 ) A you'll be ahead of a lot of people who call with 7s and 8s

Raising for the sake of raising with an A won't get you anywhere at these limits

Thanks for the help guys. It looks like some solid advice.

I forgot to say that this only applies to stud 8
